Conceived from the biological phenomenon of maternal-fetal microchimerism, this corset represents one of the most intimate intersections of medicine, fashion, and memory within the UMBRAL collection.

During pregnancy, cells from the mother and child can cross the placenta in both directions. Some of these cells may remain in the body for years — even decades — creating a microscopic trace of a bond that continues to exist long after the two bodies have separated.

Drawing from her background as a physician and her language as a designer, Michelle Ferrer transforms this biological phenomenon into a sculptural piece that explores motherhood, inheritance, and what remains within us beyond what can be seen.

Red dominates the composition as a symbol of blood, origin, and life. Across the surface of the corset, branching forms, flowers, and organic elements extend like a living network, evoking cellular connections, memory, and transformation.

At the center of the piece, a drop formed with natural rubies becomes its symbolic core: a real, mineral, and enduring presence. Not simply a representation of blood, but real matter transformed into memory.

Each element has been crafted by hand to translate an invisible concept into tangible form. The body becomes a territory of memory, while fashion becomes a language capable of expressing what science reveals at a microscopic scale.

For Michelle Ferrer, this piece speaks especially to the bond between mother and daughter: to what we inherit, what we carry within us, and the connections that may remain even when they can no longer be seen.

More than a corset, it is a reflection on permanence.
